Voter models with contrarian agents

چکیده
In the voter and many other opinion formation models, agents are assumed to behave as congregators (also called the conformists); they are attracted to the opinions of others. In this study I investigate linear extensions of the voter model with contrarian agents. An agent is either congregator or contrarian and assumes a binary opinion. I investigate three models that differ in the behavior of the contrarian toward other agents. In model 1, contrarians mimic the opinions of other contrarians and oppose (i.e., try to select the opinion opposite to) those of congregators. In model 2, contrarians mimic the opinions of congregators and oppose those of other contrarians. In model 3, contrarians oppose anybody. In all models, congregators are assumed to like anybody. I show that even a small number of contrarians prohibits the consensus in the entire population to be reached in all three models. I also obtain the equilibrium distributions using the van Kampen small-fluctuation approximation and the Fokker-Planck equation for the case of many contrarians and a single contrarian, respectively. I show that the fluctuation around the symmetric coexistence equilibrium is much larger in model 2 than in models 1 and 3 when contrarians are rare.

From Microscopic Heterogeneity to macroscopic Complexity in the contrarian Voter Model
An analytical treatment of a simple opinion model with contrarian behavior is presented. The focus is on the stationary dynamics of the model and in particular on the effect of inhomogeneities in the interaction topology on the stationary behavior. We start from a micro-level Markov chain description of the model. Markov chain aggregation is then used to derive a macro chain for the complete gr...
متن کاملPhase transition in the Sznajd model with independence
We propose a model of opinion dynamics which describes two major types of social influence conformity and independence. Conformity in our model is described by the so called outflow dynamics (known as Sznajd model). According to sociologists’ suggestions, we introduce also a second type of social influence, known in social psychology as independence. Various social experiments have shown that t...
متن کاملEffects of contrarian Investor Type in Asset Price Dynamics
We develop an asset pricing model based on the interaction of heterogeneous trading groups. In addition to the two main trader groups, fundamentalists and trend-chasing chartists, we include a third significant group known as contrarian chartists. We model the case of opportunistic contrarian behavior, where the contrarian group disagrees with the trend-chasing chartists only when the return di...
متن کاملRational Trend-Followers and Contrarians in Excessively Volatile, Correlated Markets
This paper studies an overlapping generations model with multiple securities and heterogeneously informed agents. There are two types of multiplicity of equilibria, one due to noisy rational expectations and the other resulting from self-fulfilling prophecies. Under general conditions, there exists an equilibrium in which stock returns are highly volatile and strongly correlated, even if all un...
متن کاملImitation and contrarian behaviour: hyperbolic bubbles, crashes and chaos
Imitative and contrarian behaviours are the two typical opposite attitudes of investors in stock markets. We introduce a simple model to investigate their interplay in a stock market where agents can take only two states, bullish or bearish. Each bullish (bearish) agent polls m ‘friends’ and changes her opinion to bearish (bullish) if (i) at least mρhb (mρbh) among the m agents inspected are be...
